Week of activities planned for Mexican independence celebration
Friday, Sept. 11, 1998 | 10:47 a.m.
Starting Saturday, diverse groups are hosting a week of promising events to celebrate Mexican Independence Day.
Often confused with Cinco de Mayo, which observes Mexico's 1862 defeat of the French, Mexican Independence Day commemorates the events of Sept. 16, 1810 when a priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rallied his parishioners to revolt against their Spanish colonizers.
The day is considered the start of an 11 year war that led to liberty.
Here's a breakdown of local events celebrating Mexican Independence Day.
