UNLV golfers still No. 1
Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998 | 10:46 a.m.
The UNLV golf team, which last year captured its first-ever NCAA team title, has been selected as the nation's top team entering the 1998-99 season in the preseason edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.
UNLV, which finished the 1997-98 campaign as the No. 1 team in the nation in all collegiate golf polls, is followed in second by Georgia. Georgia Tech, which finished third at the 1998 NCAA Championships, is third, while 1998 NCAA runner-up Clemson is fourth. Oklahoma State rounds out the top five.
UNLV is the only team in the nation with three players ranked in the individual top 15. They are junior Jeremy Anderson, who is tied for third, senior Chris Berry, who is tied for 12th and senior Charley Hoffman, who is tied for 13th. Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder and Matt Kuchar are ranked first and second, respectively. The Rebels will open their fall season at the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan, Sept. 16-18.
