* RUMMAGE AND BAKE SALE -- The Las Vegas Humane Society will have a rummage and bake sale beginning at 6 a.m. Sunday at Johnson's Automotive, 1845 N. Rancho Drive (located between the Las Vegas Zoological Park and Texas Station hotel-casino). For more information, call Pat at 648-5175.
* RELAY FOR LIFE -- Cancer survivors of all ages are invited to participate in the American Cancer Society's national signature fund-raising event, Relay for Life, "A Summerlin Celebration." The 18-hour event will take place 6 p.m. Friday until noon Saturday at The Crossing Soccer Park in Summerlin. The relay's theme is to honor cancer survivors in each community. Participants as well as the general public may purchase luminarias for $10. Kenny Guinn is honorary chairman. Allstate Insurance Co., Steinberg Diagnostic, KLAS Channel 8, the "Buddy Check 8" program and Summerlin are the event sponsors.

* HENDERSON FOURTH GRADERS -- Del Webb Corp. is continuing its sponsorship program, to send Henderson fourth grade students on field trips to the Las Vegas Natural History Museum this school year. Del Webb started the program during the 1997 school year, and as a result, more than 1,000 Henderson fourth-graders were able to experience a "Learning Safari" at the museum. The success of the program prompted Del Well to sponsor the field trips for the 1998-99 school year. Del Webb's donation covers the cost of school bus transportation as well as museum admission for the classes involved.
* STARS NSTEP NIGHT -- Former major leaguer and broadcaster Joe Garagiola attended a special event called NSTEP -- National Spit Tobacco Education Program -- at a recent Las Vegas Stars baseball game. The Stars, along with the American Cancer Society, educated players and fans about the dangers of spit tobacco use and attempted to break its long-standing link to America's pastime.
* SPRINT DONATES COMPUTERS -- Local community groups received much-needed computer equipment thanks to a donation from Sprint. A total of four, 486 base processor computers were given to Nevada Ballet Theatre, Las Vegas Little Theatre and Garold Gardner Scholarship Foundation. * SUMMER CAMP GRANTS -- Paradise Sertoma raised more than $57,000, enabling the service club to send 80 deaf children with 30 counselors to summer camp. It is also granted college scholarships to any deaf student who wishes to further his or her education.

* EDUCATION HERO AWARD -- The Clark County Public Education Foundation will honor Billy Vassiliadis and R&R Advertising at the second annual Education Hero Award Dinner on Saturday at Caesars Palace. The dinner co-chairs are Sig Rogich and Erin Kenny, along with honorary co-chair John L. Goolsby. Tickets, which are $300, may be purchased by calling Kim Weiss at 799-1042.
* SUN SAFETY PROGRAM -- Alexandra Wong, 9, of Las Vegas, was named the finalist for the state of Nevada in the "Block the Sun, Not the Fun" poster contest. Her poster showed children wearing protective sun gear and sunscreen while surfing and enjoying themselves at the beach. The campaign is designed to make children lifelong participants of sunblocking practices.

* SCORE OFFICERS -- The Las Vegas chapter of the Service Corps of Retired Executives held its annual installation of officers recently at the Main Street Station hotel-casino. SCORE is a volunteer organization, which counsels small business owners and those who desire to start a new business. For information, call 388-6104.
Special needs
* CCSD PARTNERS WITH GOODWILL -- The School-Community Partnership Program and Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada Inc. have established a new partnership, "Goodwill Giving." The goal is to provide necessary clothing and school items for high school students in need. High school students will be encouraged to bring their families' gently used clothing and other household items to a donation site at their high school. Every bag or box of quality donations will be worth Goodwill retail store vouchers distributed by the Partnership Office. The vouchers can be used to purchase clothing and school items at any of Goodwill's four local retail stores.
* UMC AUXILIARY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS -- UMC's Auxiliary is seeking new members to join their organization to help in their fund-raising efforts. Dedicated to raising money to purchase lifesaving equipment, the auxiliary raised more than $150,000 last year. For more information, call 383-2388.
* HEALTHCARE SEMINAR -- In honor of National Assisted Living Week Sept. 13-19, Sunlake Terrace, an ARV assisted living community, will host a seminar at 6 p.m. Sept. 16 featuring Kim Boyer, Esq., titled "Long Term Healthcare Planning and the Decision Making Process." The seminar is designed to educate listeners about options in long-term healthcare planning and the skills necessary to make informed decisions. Admission is free, but reservations are requested. * HELPING HEARTS -- The Southern Nevada Volunteer First Aid/ Rescue of Las Vegas, has been accepted into the Prudential Helping Hearts Program. This program helps purchase portable cardiac defibrillators, which administer jolts of electricity to reset the heart's natural rhythm.
* PASTEL ARTISTS -- The Nevada Pastel Society will hold its fall kickoff meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the West Charleston Library Conference Room, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. A nonprofit organization, the society welcomes all artists who are interested in promoting pastel as an artistic medium. Annual dues are $10. For more information, call 254-1938.
* CRAFTER'S VILLAGE DONATIONS -- The Salvation Army will collect food items at the Crafter's Village Festival Sept. 11-13 at Cashman Field. It will also offer a $1 discount off the ticket price in exchange for donations. For more information, call 870-4430, ext. 18.

* LOCAL ARTISTS WANTED -- Goodwill is trying to scare up some local artists, university and high school art students to show their talent and create a Halloween scene on a window at the Goodwill store in Las Vegas.
