A 16-year-old football player in Loma Linda, Calif., was declared dead, one day after he was critically injured during practice.
Chino High School linebacker Scott Maughan took a hit to the head at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday during tackling drills, authorities said Wednesday. He collapsed and was airlifted unconscious to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
"Scott walked back past his coach. His coach noticed that he was a little unsteady," Chino High principal Robert Nero said.
Chino Valley Unified School District spokesman John Lynde said the teen underwent an hour-long surgery that began about three hours after the injury.
San Bernardino County coroner's Deputy Jim Sedgwick said the coroner declared the boy dead at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday.
