Motorcycle cop suffers broken bones in collision

Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998 | 10:54 a.m.

A Metro Police motorcycle officer remained hospitalized today in serious but stable condition after being struck by another motorist while patrolling East Lake Mead Boulevard.

Officer Mark Dabney, 34, broke his left leg, right arm and suffered a pelvic injury in Wednesday's 6:25 a.m. collision just east of Hollywood Boulevard. Jay Allen Scott, 34, of Las Vegas, who was behind the wheel of the 1980 Chevrolet Malibu that hit Dabney's motorcycle, escaped uninjured.

Dabney had been westbound on Lake Mead in the left of two travel lanes when Scott, who was eastbound, attempted to turn left into the Mountainside Apartments, 6800 E. Lake Mead.

Based on evidence at the scene and witnesses' statements, investigating traffic officers said Dabney, an 11-year Metro veteran, was unable to completely stop his motorcycle, which hit the right front of Scott's Chevrolet.

Police have yet to file charges in the case pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
