Las Vegas Stars scorecard — September 3, 1998

Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998 | 10:01 a.m.

By Tim Graham

The Las Vegas Stars would not have required Dave Hajek's record-breaking, ninth-inning heroics if not for some shaky moments on the mound by starter Brian Tollberg and reliever Mike Rossiter. With the Stars ahead 5-2 in the fifth inning, Tollberg drilled Sidewinders first baseman Mike Robertson, a Las Vegas resident, in the foot to load the bases. One pitch later, Tollberg hit catcher Tom Wilson in the head to force home a run. Rossiter, who entered in the seventh inning, failed to record an out but allowed Tucson to score two runs and tie the game at 6. ... First baseman Eddie Williams hit his 20th home run of the season, and right fielder Aaron Guiel smacked his fifth. ... Stars hitting coach Craig Colbert pinch hit for Tollberg in the sixth inning. He weakly dribbled the ball in front of the plate and was thrown out at first by the catcher. ... Williams recorded three RBIs on Wednesday, giving him 203 for his Stars career. He needs five more RBIs to move into second place on the Stars all-time list. ... Tonight's Stars starter, Matt Clement, needs only four more strikeouts to break the team single-season record of 161 set by Scott Sanders in 1993. Clement's 158 K's lead the Pacific Coast League. His 29 hit batsmen tops all of professional baseball. ... Stars infielder Greg LaRocca has missed the last six games due to a nagging right hamstring injury. ... The San Diego Padres activated outfielder Tony Gwynn from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. The Padres, however, do not need to assign anyone to make room for Gwynn now that active rosters have been increased from 25 to 40 players.
