Togliatti, Schaefer advance
Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998 | 10:53 a.m.
Jennifer Togliatti and Mike Schaefer will face-off against each other for Department 7 Justice of the Peace in the general election after advancing from the five-candidate primary.
Togliatti received 42.85 percent of the vote while Schaefer moved on to the general election with 19.03 percent.
Togliatti, 31, is a deputy district attorney who graduated from UNLV and California Western School of Law. She is currently assigned to the Crimes Against Women and Children Unit where she prosecutes sexual assault charges.
Togliatti advocates restructuring the Justice Courts to balance caseloads for better efficiency.
Schaefer, 60, is a lawyer who has been running his campaign while on house arrest after being convicted of misdemeanor charges of pepper spraying one of his neighbors and shoving another.
Justice Courts handle misdemeanor and traffic cases, felony arraignments and preliminary hearings, minor civil matters, temporary protective orders and evictions.
The newly created Department 7 judgship was the only race for justice of the peace with the other three departments having no challengers for the incumbents.
Those who were not challenged were Department 3 Judge Tony Abbatangelo, Department 4 Judge James Bixler and Department 6 Judge Nancy Oesterle.
Justices of the peace serve six-year terms.
