Las Vegas Stars scorecard — September 2, 1998
Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998 | 9:36 a.m.
The Las Vegas Stars batted around in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to beat the Tucson Sidewinders 6-5 in the rain Tuesday night at Cashman Field. The Sidewinders loaded the bases on a single and two walks with two outs in the seventh, but Stars reliever Paul Menhart struck out pinch hitter and Las Vegas resident Mike Robertson to end the threat. Tucson reliever Stephen Randolph walked in Las Vegas' eighth-inning insurance run. Stars starter Heath Murray gave up four runs in six innings but raised his record to 9-11. ... Las Vegas second baseman Dave Hajek went 1-for-3 on Tuesday, giving him 170 hits on the season. Hajek needs three more hits to break the Stars' single-season record, which was set in 1990 by Paul Faries. ... The San Diego Padres did not call anyone up from Las Vegas even though major-league active rosters expanded from 25 to 40 players on Tuesday. "We probably won't have anything happen until we go to Colorado Springs (on Friday)," Stars manager Jerry Royster said. "The Padres happen to be in Denver (to play the Colorado Rockies) at the same time we're in Colorado Springs. I imagine that if guys leave it won't be until then." ... Pitcher Bubba Dixon will miss the rest of the season after straining ligaments in his left (throwing) hand. Dixon injured himself in Monday's loss when he tried to field a ball hit back up the middle. ... Royster claimed the Padres will not replace Dixon on the roster. "Our Double-A team (in Mobile) finished its regular season and is getting ready for the playoffs," Royster said. "In fact, every team in the organization has a chance to make the playoffs except us and our rookie-ball team." ... Utilityman Archi Cianfrocco started for the first time in three days because of his nagging back injury. He started at third base and went 1-for-4 with a run.

Right-hander Matt Clement (10-8, 3.91) opposes Sidewinders right-hander Nelson Figueroa (1-2, 4.59) in Thursday's finale. Las Vegas then completes its season with four games in Colorado Springs starting Friday.
