Letter: Free speech takes a couple of hits

Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998 | 4:30 a.m.

Lee Plotkin is on the warpath and Bill Mason had better look out. Mason is the UNLV police officer who expressed his opposition to homosexuals on the university e-mail system and Plotkin wants him fired.

As Plotkin puts it, the e-mail "causes gay students and faculty members to distrust the police department." Adding, "here is someone who is disparaging an entire demographic that he is supposed to be protecting."

Sunday's paper carried an Associated Press story about a group of physicians, social scientists and conservative activists who wanted to hold a conference at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The Los Angeles City Council condemned the conference and the Beverly Hilton said "take a hike" to the group.

In both cases, the message is clear. Don't say anything negative about homosexuals or you will be shut down. Whatever happened to free speech?
