Letter: Church articles should refocus
Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998 | 4:30 a.m.
In your Chronicles of Faith article on Catholicism it seemed that the focus was on the material and not the spiritual realities of the church.
You mentioned that the Church has a "political" position on abortion and homosexuality. The Roman Catholic Church is apolitical; its positions on abortion and homosexuality are based on morality, the law of God.
It may be of interest to your readers to know that, while the church is opposed to the taking of human life, it welcomes to its fold those who do so and suffer the guilt and remorse so often attached to the act. The church offers healing for the suffering. As for homosexuality, the church teaches that it is OK to be homosexual but not OK to practice it.
A considerable amount of the article was related to celibacy and priests leaving the priesthood. The Holy Spirit, who guides our Church, also helps priests who pray for the grace to remain celibate.
The latest statistics that I am aware of regarding priests leaving the priesthood is that approximately 2 percent do so for a variety of reasons. How about doing an article on the 98 percent of the priests who remain in the priesthood?
