Holiday Closings

Nevada Day, the 134th anniversary of the state's admission to the Union in 1864, is Oct. 31. Some businesses and agencies are observing the holiday on Friday, others on Saturday and others not at all. Here's a look at what's open and closed Friday (and Saturday, if the entity is normally open):
Safety: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed Friday.
Utilities: Open Friday: Sprint, Southwest Gas, Nevada Power, Cox Cable. Closed Friday: Las Vegas Valley Water District.
Government: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts. Open: Federal offices, federal courthouse.
Schools: Closed, no classes: Clark County public schools, Community College of Southern Nevada, UNLV.
Mail: Open, deliveries as usual: United Parcel Service, U.S. Postal Service.
Newspaper: Sun afternoon editions published as usual. Sun offices open.
Transit: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Trolleys: Holiday schedule (two vehicles instead of three operating) on Friday. Citizen Area Transit: Public buses on regular schedule, para-transit buses on holiday schedule Friday (fewer buses available).
Libraries: Open Friday and Saturday: Boulder City Municipal. Closed Friday/open Saturday: North Las Vegas District. Open Friday/closed Saturday: Las Vegas-Clark County District, Henderson District.
Garbage: Silver State Disposal pickups as usual, offices open Friday.
Matrimony: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting 8 a.m. Friday, closing 12 a.m. Monday.
Finances: Banks: Up to individual banks whether they will open or close Friday, according to the Nevada Division of Financial Institutions. Brokerage firms: Open Friday.
Zoo: Open: Southern Nevada Zoological Park and Botanical Garden.
Parking: City metered parking spaces are free.
