Reno council approves pay raise
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998 | 11:17 a.m.
The mayor's annual salary will increase from $25,000 to $39,600. Council members' annual pay will climb from $20,000 to $34,500.
The pay hikes don't go into effect until the next council and mayor are seated. Mayor Jeff Griffin, the only Council member who is running for re-election, abstained from the 3-2 vote.
The council also voted to raise the city's room tax by 1 percent if Washoe County Commissioners decide to impose a new 0.25-cent sales tax.
The conditional increase would put Reno's room levy at 10 percent and raise about $1 million in additional revenue.
The money would be used to help finance a ditch for railroad tracks running through downtown Reno, as would half of the money raised from the county sales tax hike that is being considered by the commission.
