Noted journalist and author Linda Ellerbee will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday as part of the Barrick Lecture Series at UNLV in the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall. The event is free, but tickets are required. Tickets may be picked up at the Performing Arts Center box office at Ham Concert Hall. Call 895-3801.
* Aikido -- a Japanese martial art of self defense that begins Nov. 2.
* Reiki -- Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation to improve health and enhance the quality of life, Nov. 4.
* Isometric Low Impact Exercise -- Class specializes in offering exercises for those with lesser mobility who need a low impact workout. New session begins Nov. 2.
* Tiny Tots Program -- A new session of Tiny Tots begins Nov. 2. Three-year-old classes. Call 293-9256.
* Youth Center -- will be closed Oct. 23 through Oct. 31 due to Country Store at Grace Community Church. Center will re-open Nov. 3.
* Gymnastics Instructor -- The Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department is looking for a qualified instructor for its gymnastics program. Anyone interested should contact the Recreation Department at 293-9256.
* Halloween Carnival -- Enjoy a host of carnival games, tricks and treats from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Recreation Center. For more information regarding any of the Boulder City Recreation events, call 293-9256.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the temporary Park Visitor's Center at the Silver Bowl near Sam Boyd Stadium to help clear an area of cut tamarisk, a non-native tree destructive to the desert environment.
The Citizen Alert's clean-up commemorates a tradition started by the UNLV Environmental Studies Department of celebrating Nevada Day by donating time to improve the community.
The workshops are aimed at helping residents and business owners improve their marketability in the business world. All classes are free, and personal care gifts will be provided to all who attend. A list of workshops:
Nov. 2 "PC Computer Basics" 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; "Small Business: What Can You Expect From Your Attorney?" 1:30-2:30 p.m.; "Small Business: What Can You Expect from Your Accountant?" 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and "Small Business: The Most Important Marketing Tip -- Location, Location, Location" 4 to 5 p.m.
Nov. 3 "Men: Dress for Success to Get that Job," 9 to 10 a.m.; "Legal Tips for the Average Person," 10:30-11:30 a.m.; "Preparing Yourself for the 1998 Tax Season," 1:30-2:30 p.m.; and "Learn to Run PC Computers from 1,2,3," 3 to 4 p.m.
Nov. 6 "Do It Yourself Electrical & Air Conditioning Tips for That Old House," 9 to 10 a.m.; "Women: Dress for Success to Get That Job," 1 to 2 p.m.
All workshops will be held in the training center at the Las Vegas Business Center, 1951 Stella Lake Drive, Suite 30, at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Lake Mead Drive.
