Letter: Las Vegas needs a voice to expose Adelson
Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998 | 10:59 a.m.
I think I saw a glimpse of Hank in your Sunday editorials.
Venetian boss Sheldon Adelson is reportedly smearing County Commission candidates Erin Kenny, Dario Herrera and Myrna Williams with $2 million of malicious mudslinging in the final two weeks of the race. He's overwhelming their campaigns, spending more money than these three candidates will likely spend for the whole election.
How can we expect our elected leaders to vote their conscience against any Adelson demands, knowing they'll risk unleashing one of his multimillion dollar tantrums next election?
This is the most dangerous situation, and the biggest political story in decades.
Adelson can spend his money as he pleases, but our Founding Fathers expected such perverse excesses to be countered by the critical role of the free press, informing the electorate with as much vigor as those who would wish to misinform us.
You characterized Adelson's barrage of blatantly misleading negative ads as a "campaign of hate." I hope Sunday's editorials are the first salvo of a campaign of truth to counter him.
The danger to our democracy posed by this man should be your daily front page story until the election. We need the Sun's independent voice now more than ever.
