Russo endorses Jones for governor
Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998 | 10:52 a.m.
Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Aaron Russo urged his supporters not to throw away their votes for a minor party candidate, and endorsed Democrat Jan Laverty Jones for governor in a live news conference on KXNT 840 radio Monday night.
"I am not a politician and that's why my supporters wanted me to be governor," Russo said. "They trusted me to make the hard decisions and tell the truth.
"And the truth is that Kenny Guinn is a puppet who is nothing more than a creation of his advertising agency."
Russo went on to say that he agrees with Jones on four key issues, which is why he endorses the Las Vegas mayor in her bid for governor.
Russo said those issues are: stopping nuclear waste from coming to Nevada by going to the Supreme Court; the unconstitutional taxing of tips by the IRS; the outrageous cost of registering a car ;and a belief that voting machines should have a paper trail to verify their accuracy.
Early voting
Early voting is gaining in popularity in Clark County: 69 percent more residents participated during the first weekend of voting this year than two years ago.
According to Clark County Registar of Voters Kathryn Ferguson, 7,616 people voted Saturday and Sunday at various polling spots throughout the area.
During the general election two years ago, 4,496 people voted during the first two days, she said.
"Early voting really is a matter of convenience," Ferguson said. "Many people who ordinarily might not vote are voting now because of this."
Early voting will continue until Oct. 30.
Outgoing clerk endorses Bledsoe
Outgoing Clark County Clerk Loretta Bowman has endorsed Sam Bledsoe to be her successor. Bowman, who has served as the county's clerk for nearly 34 years, said she believes Bledsoe can cope with the challenges that the rapid growth of the county creates.
Bledsoe will face Shirley Parraguirre for the clerk's position. Parraguirre has been endorsed by the Veterans in Politics.
