Common schedule sought for year-round schools

The Clark County School Board last week began tackling the issue of creating a common year-round school calendar for both elementary and middle schools.
Roughly one-third of the district's 227 schools use year-round calendars to deal with crowding. Middle schools use a four-track system. One-fourth of the school population is on break at any given time, which eases crowding. Elementary schools use a five-track system.
School board members say they have been inundated by parents' pleas to make the elementary and middle school year-round calendars the same, to accommodate family vacation times.
On Thursday, 10 principals and area superintendents who make up the district's year-round calendar committee presented five calendar options that match up middle and elementary school calendars.
School board members asked district staffers to figure out how much the common calendar change would cost. The board is likely to take up the issue again at a special meeting to be scheduled before the end of the year.
