UNLV Volleyball wins ninth-straight match
Friday, Oct. 16, 1998 | 11:13 a.m.
LAS VEGAS-Led by junior Angie Sylvas' match-high 22 kills, the UNLV volleyball team defeated SMU 15-8, 13-15, 15-2, 6-15, 20-18 in a Western Athletic Conference match Thursday at Lied Gymnasium.
The victory was the ninth-in-a-row for the Rebels, extending their program record for most consecutive victories.
Sophomore Justine Kamelamela added a double-double of 18 kills and 12 digs as UNLV improved its record to 15-3 overall and remained unbeaten in WAC play at 4-0. Senior Meri-de Boyer turned in match-highs of 70 assists and 13 digs. Junior Christel Eves and freshman Amber Graham also recorded double figures in kills with 15 and 13, respectively.
With their 15th win of the season, the Rebels exceeded their win total of the last two years combined. UNLV won five matches in 1996, its first season after 11 years off, and won nine matches in 1997.
SMU (10-9, 1-3 WAC) was junior Erin Pryor's 19 kills and 11 digs. The Rebels out-hit the Mustangs .220 to .213 for the match and recorded 79 kills to SMU's 57.
UNLV's next action will be Saturday, Oct. 17 as it hosts TCU in a WAC match at 7:00 p.m. at Lied Gymnasium.
