Editorial: Innovation required to get more teachers

Friday, Oct. 16, 1998 | 11:45 a.m.

In an effort to ease a statewide shortage of elementary and secondary school teachers, a task force with representatives from local school districts and the university system is presenting a plan to the Board of Regents. Under the proposal that the board will consider at its Nov. 19-20 meeting, students majoring in education classes would get as much as a 50 percent tuition discount if they enroll in a loan-forgiveness program and agree to remain in Nevada and teach.

The competition between all states for teachers is fierce. Innovative solutions are needed if Nevada is to attract quality instructors to help teach the next generation of students.

On the surface this sounds like a good plan but a number of administrative questions should be addressed, including how the program will enforce payment of full tuition if a student decides to not teach in Nevada after getting the degree. But the tuition reduction plan deserves to be taken seriously by the Board of Regents and the 1999 Nevada Legislature.
