Letter: Cartoon character has it right
Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998 | 11:46 a.m.
Lisa, an elementary school child, had a crush on a boy. Their relationship was developing quite nicely. Then Lisa caught her boyfriend lying to her. She could not accept this behavior. She dumped him like a hot potato, even though he had apologized for his action.
Lisa's actions illustrated adherence to a set of absolute values, ones which must be followed, or else face the consequences. It is often said that children can be brutal in their actions because they speak and act from the heart without hidden agendas. They just do it.
If our nation still followed a set of absolute values, perhaps we wouldn't have to plan for theft when preparing corporate budgets, run kids through metal detectors when entering school grounds, ask members of congress to "vote their conscience" on issues before them, or try and pass good Samaritan laws forcing people to act in a way benefiting others in need. Thank you, Lisa, for sticking up of old fashioned values.
