NLV rec center gets unanimous vote of approval

The North Las Vegas City Council has unanimously approved a plan that will allow the city to move forward on constructing a new recreation center.
City staff reported at the council's Wednesday night meeting that the development of the new center will cost about $3.5 million. The cost of the project will be funded through the city's recreation funds.
"The citizens in this community have loudly said that they need another recreation center in the city," Councilwoman Paula Brown said. "Of 800 surveys that were sent out by the Parks and Recreation Committee 41 percent came back saying there is a need for a new recreation center."
North Las Vegas currently has a recreation center at 1638 N. Bruce St. That center will remain open councilors said, with a new center opening in a different part of North Las Vegas to accommodate other residents.
"The people in the northwest part of North Las Vegas have expressed a need for the project in their area, because it is too far for them to travel to the Bruce Street center," Brown said. "I'd like to see it put in the northwest possibly near Craig (Road), Cheyenne (Avenue) or Lone Mountain (Road)."
The new center will be about 20,000 square feet and cost about $112 a square foot city staff said.
The city is looking to put the center on a piece of land that is approximately five acres. The Bruce Street center is situated on about two acres, so there would be room to expand the new center in the future if funds became available said city staff members.
The council also decided to move forward with developing soccer fields in the lower Las Vegas Wash Detention Basin. City planners estimate the cost for the fields to be between $1.5 and $3.5 million depending on the number of fields, lighting, parking and landscaping costs.
