Las Vegas woman dies in auto crash
Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998 | 11:34 a.m.
A Las Vegas woman was killed and her two children injured when she lost control of her car, crashed through a wall and snapped a telephone pole in half on Paradise Road Tuesday night.
Angered by an argument with her boyfriend at a nearby McDonald's restaurant, Christy Delynn Toon, 23, was reported by witnesses to have sped out of the parking lot and north on Paradise when the accident happened shortly after 6 p.m., said Trooper Scott Flabi.
Toon's car veered left just south of Convention Center Drive, crossing into the southbound lanes and ramming through a residential block wall and a telephone pole on the west side of the street. The residents of the property her car ended up on were not home at the time, Flabi said.
Toon was killed instantly. Her children, a 6-year-old girl and a 2-month-old boy, were taken by paramedics to University Medical Center with minor injuries. A hospital spokeswoman said both children were released from the hospital at 9:15 p.m.
Investigators suspect that something may have been physically wrong with Toon, based on statement from her boyfriend that she appeared to either be having a bad reaction to her medicine or might possibly have been drinking, Flabi said.
The boyfriend, whose name was not released, told the NHP that the couple met up at the Monte Carlo hotel-casino where he works and traveled in separate cars to the fast food restaurant to get something to eat.
"The boyfriend said he noticed that Toon's speech was slurred," Flabi said. "He knows that she takes an anti-depressant medication, and he was concerned because she seemed unusually irritable and was having temper swings. He thought she might have mixed the drugs with alcohol."
A fight started between the couple when the boyfriend asked Toon to let him drive the her and the children home, according to the report. She was killed seconds after speeding away from the restaurant.
Samples of Toon's blood were taken for laboratory analysis. The results are due back within the next two weeks.
