Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesdays.
The Las Vegas Country Club's annual member-guest, purported to be the oldest and longest-running tournament of its kind in Nevada, was held last weekend under near perfect weather conditions and on a course that was in pristine shape.
The huge field of 92 two-man teams played best-ball of partners (with ninety per cent of handicap) the first day. The second day it was combined low net with full handicaps.
Combining magnificently and giving no quarter, Coe Power and his partner, John Costabile, won overall honors handily with a 199 score. They also took low gross honors with a 219.
In the Spades flight, the Mo Ramchand/Jimmy Lee pairing won with a 205. Glenn Hurst and C.E. Ricketts placed second at 207 with third place going to Bill Blackard and partner Danny Skarda with their 208.
Frank Reed and Nick August prevailed in the Hearts flight, coming in with a 203. The Glenn Raynes/Mark Johnson duo placed second with 211 while in third at 215 were Ron Hansen and Montey Thompson.
Victors in the Diamonds flight via a card countback were Andy Wheeler and John Babcock. Their 205 score was the same as Walter Atebara and Percy Higashi, who placed second. Third went to Cliff Buckley and Charlie Lombardo at 210.
Ham and egging it to perfection in the Clubs flight, Dwight Meierhenry and Steve Wright's 212 edged Howard Goodwin/Tom Meier and Jeff Harmon/Dan McCormick at 214.
Singing impressionist Danny Gans will preside over the first Danny Gans Invitational Nov. 17 at Rio Secca golf course. The $300 entry fee price include golf, cart green fees and tee prizes (including a Danny Gans travel bag), as well as instruction from Butch Harmon, Tiger Woods' coach. Proceeds will benefit the Boys Town of Nevada and the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association. For full entry information, contact Jacque Ann Chapman at 451-7150.
