Brief: October jobless rate steady at 3.8 percent

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation said today there were an estimated 33,100 people out of work, about 2,800 fewer than in September. The 3.8 percent rate compares to 4.6 percent nationally and the 5.9 percent rate in California.
In the Las Vegas metropolitan statistical area, the jobless rate fell from 3.9 percent in September to 3.5 percent in October with 25,000 people out of work. Employment rose to 581,000, up 6.3 percent from October 1997.
Statewide there were 951,100 people employed, 45,900 more than in October 1997.
