Gabelli and several investment funds he controls now own 6.1 million, or 13.5 percent, of the 45.2 million Aztar common shares outstanding, according to a reported filed this week with the Securities & Exchange Commission.
The Gabelli group bought the Aztar stock in blocks of 1,000 to 39,100 shares at prices ranging from $3.125 to $5.6875, according to the filing. Aztar was off 6.25 cents to $5.0625 in midday trading today.
Aztar also owns casinos in Laughlin, Atlantic City, Missouri and Indiana. It has frequently been mentioned as a takeover candidate, most recently by Bear Stearns & Co.
