School Board wants fee on new homes to help pay for school construction

Monday, Nov. 23, 1998 | 9:39 a.m.

Board members also are asking commissioners to approve a quarter-cent sales tax hike for the same reason.

Board members voted to approach commissioners with the requests, but held out little hope they would gain approval.

Superintendent Ron Flores suggested making the request because they were two of the options made available by the 1997 Legislature to raise money for school construction.

He said he expects school construction to be a hot topic again at the 1999 Legislature.

"One of the first questions they (legislators) will ask of us is have you availed yourself of the opportunities we gave you at the last session," he said.
