Letter: More to story, about Lanni, gambling panel
Monday, Nov. 23, 1998 | 11:46 a.m.
Sun columnist Jeff German's remarks last Sunday concerning an outburst by Terry Lanni, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the MGM Grand hotel-casino, at the National Gambling Impact Study Commission hearing in Las Vegas, left a few things out.
Neither in my written nor oral presentation to the commission, nor at any other time, have I ever accused Lanni of having plotted the MGM's takeover of the Tropicana sidewalk. We can all understand why Lanni would so fiercely disavow any association with it, but he implied that I made an accusation I never made. It was the age-old attack-the-messenger trick. The message apparently struck a chord.
Lanni's alibi is airtight. He wasn't there when the MGM took the sidewalk and he had nothing to do with it.
He has merely presided over the MGM for the past 3 1/2 years while doing nothing about it.
