Brief: Work starts on first Detroit casino
Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998 | 11:43 a.m.
This is the first actual ground work to be accomplished as Detroit develops three casinos in a bid to become a tourist attraction and shake its rust belt image.
While work is under way on the first of three temporary casinos, city officials and casino executives are struggling in their effort to acquire land for three permanent casinos.
The Detroit Free Press reported the casinos are questioning the city's estimated cost of acquiring permanent casino land: $154 million. The city, meantime, is balking at any agreement that would leave it liable for unanticipated costs.
