Washoe County may get highest sales tax in the state
Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998 | 9:23 a.m.
The Washoe County Commission voted 4-1 on Tuesday in favor of raising the local sales tax one-quarter cent.
That would put the county's sales tax at 7.25 percent, three-fourths of a cent higher than most other counties in Nevada.
The vote is subject to a second reading of the ordinance, a public hearing and a final vote tentatively set for Dec. 8.
The increase would go into effect April 1, 1999. Half of the new revenue would go toward construction of a railroad trench in downtown Reno and the other half for new flood control and public safety projects.
