Preps: Southern teams eliminated for state soccer

Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998 | 11:06 a.m.

Mike Eshragh had a hat trick in the first half, but the Silverado soccer team still wasn't able to fight of the Carson Senators.

Carson completed the north=92s sweep of southern teams at this year's= 4A NIAA/US Bank state soccer tournament with a 4-3 win over the Skyhawks.

In the first game of the day, Reno scored twice in overtime to defeat a Chaparral squad that played the entire overtime session one man short because of a red card.

"We had several great opportunities," Silverado coach John Cwik sai d. "We were just unlucky. I really think we were."

Carson's Eric Clark scored two first half goals to pace the Senators, including one in the first minute of the game. Both of Carson's first half goals came on bad clearance out of the backfield from the Silverado defense.

Eshragh kept the Skyhawks in the game.

He scored goals in the 15th, 31st and 40th minute of action to give Silverado a 3-2 halftime advantage.

But, Carson tied the game at three in the 59th minute when junior defender Toby Steele ripped a shot off the cross bar and off Silverado goalie Brian Formisano's back and into the net.

Carson won the game in the 72nd minute on a deflection goal.

In the first game, Reno jumped out 2-0 goal behind goals from Mike Epsteyn in the 22 minute and Alec Gordon in the 64th minutes.

Chaparral rallied to score twice before time expired in regulation.

The Cowboys' first goal was scored with 14 minutes left in the game as David Delcid headed in a cross from Mauricio Chavarria.

The second goal came on a wild play.

With seven minutes left in the game, Reno's goalie Nate Rosenbloom was called for stalling time and Chaparral got an indirect free kick from five yards out. Sophomore Arthur Sykes easily pounded home the tying goal and Chaparral had life.

That life ended in overtime when Reno took advantage of playing with the extra man to slot twice to end the Chaparral season.

Epseteyn scored his second goal of the game to put Reno ahead and senior Derek Orchard found the back of the net for some insurance.

The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m.

Carson is the only team to win a state soccer title from the north, taking home the title in 1994.
