Killer bees are here to stay, will become more docile

Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998 | 11:22 a.m.

Kirk Visscher, an entomology professor at the University of California, Riverside, says killer bees that came to Southern Nevada this year are here to stay.

But he says the number of encounters they will have with humans and pets will probably taper off as the bees settle in and people become more aware of them.

Visscher said what this means is that you've got a new rattlesnake, an insect that is potentially threatening. And he said, just as with a rattlesnake, you have to keep an eye out for the bees and avoid them.

Visscher is one of 4,000 insect and plant experts in Las Vegas this week for a meeting of the Entomological Society of America and the American Phytopathological Society.
