With the gift, Gov. Bob Miller said a $5 million project to renovate the 22-room mansion and add an adjoining building for social events can be quickly completed - possibly by the time Gov.-elect Kenny Guinn takes office in January.
"This is the one that is putting us over the top," Miller said. "While we were able to begin this ambitious project through the generosity of some Nevadans, this award from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation is the one which allows us to finish what we started. This contribution ensures completion of the project."
Earlier, Anchor Coin President Stan Fulton of Las Vegas donated $2 million in stock for the renovation, and an anonymous donor contributed $500,000. The foundation grant brings the project within $500,000 of its fund-raising goal.
Miller and his family moved out of the 90-year-old mansion in August when workers started the construction project. They have been living in their private home in Las Vegas or staying in the Ormsby House when in Carson City.
