Brief: Boyd Gaming drops plans for new hotel-casino

"We have terminated the deal," said Rob Stillwell, a Boyd spokesman.
The company had been looking at building a 210-room resort with a movie theater and bowling lanes on a 13.8-acre site owned by developer Gil Strange. Boyd caught flack from several nearby residents at a special September meeting the company called to discuss the project.
An earlier plan by Station Casinos to build a resort at the same location was also dropped. Station officials said it is doubtful neighboring residents will ever acquiesce to a casino resort in the area.
Stillwell said a combination of community concerns and a tight calendar -- under a new state law, most neighborhood casino proposals will not be allowed after Dec. 31 -- prompted the company to terminate its plans.
