Turnout “a little light” after record early voting

Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998 | 7:29 a.m.

Registrar of Voters Kathryn Ferguson said 41,360 people had voted at 248 polling places as of 10:30 a.m. She said the number was a little shy of what she had expected, but the count could pick up later in the day.

Ferguson had predicted that today's voter turnout would be about 167,000 before polls closed at 7 p.m.

In addition, 85,646 voters cast early ballots. Mail-in ballots numbered 35,300 as of this morning and were expected to climb to 38,000 before the end of the day.

The record early-voting means election officials will have at least 40 percent of the vote count immediately after 7 p.m., giving some idea as to how races are running. The early ballots and mail ballots are being counted today and those results will be posted at 7 p.m.
