Missing northern California plane found in Nevada, no survivors

Monday, Nov. 2, 1998 | 9:02 a.m.

Washoe County sheriff's Lt. Geof Wise said all three people aboard the plane were killed when it crashed and burst into flames.

The victims were identified as pilot William Goss, 54, of Nevada City, Calif., his wife, Karen, 54, and their son, Matthew, 24.

Wise said a helicopter pilot spotted the downed aircraft Sunday near Big Mouth Canyon south of Pyramid Lake.

Searchers began looking for the plane after it disappeared from radar Thursday in the mountains south of the desert lake.

The Cessna 182 left Grass Valley, Calif., early Thursday on the first leg of a flight that was to have ended in Montana after a brief stop in Winnemucca.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by federal authorities.

More than 100 searchers from seven Nevada counties, the Pyramid Lake Tribal Police and Civil Air Patrol took part in the search.

The Civil Air Patrol searched more than 400 square miles Saturday, retracing some of the terrain searched Friday.
