Man sentenced for sexual assault of pizza deliverywoman

Monday, Nov. 2, 1998 | 9:07 a.m.

District Court Judge Archie Blake handed down the sentences last week to Raymond Carter, 42, who was convicted of the crime in August.

Lyon County sheriff's deputies said the woman was trying to deliver a pizza last Nov. 15 to a Mason Valley location when she was lured to an unlit area and sexually assaulted.

Deputies said a forensic hypnotist broke the case open by assisting the victim in recalling information she previously had been unable to remember.

The case marked the first time a hypnotist was used in such a manner in Nevada under a new state law permitting their use in criminal cases.

Carter and his wife, Marlene, both maintain his innocence.

"I believe totally in my husband's innocence," she said. "The real rapist is still out there, so watch out."

Carter lawyer Robert Grayson said he would appeal his client's conviction.
