Letter: Other issues in Michigan election
Monday, Nov. 2, 1998 | 10:25 a.m.
The election there may reach further than Democrat Geoffrey Fieger and Republican incumbent Gov. John Engler. There is a debate of other important issues.
Road conditions in Michigan reached an all-time low last year before the governor finally released federal funds to repair them. I have driven in Michigan for more than 50 years and they had never been as bad as they were last year when I left there. Of course, there is the issue of assisted suicide.
Education is probably the greatest issue of all between the candidates. The governor believes in privatization of education, vouchers in education and charter schools. Fieger believes in public education and state funds going only to that end, in direct opposition to what the governor supports.
One other factor which might enter the picture there is Fieger has indicated that he would reject any payment for the job as governor. Fieger is apparently a very wealthy man. Fieger is also apparently an odd ball and has many strange idiosyncrasies. He has even turned off many in the Democratic Party. However, when the final second arrives to cast his/her vote, the voter may think seriously about handing Engler another term as governor.
