Austin is praised as a booming technology hub with lots of software companies as well as being the headquarters city for Dell Computer.
Of Las Vegas, Fortune notes it has ranked among the top 10 fastest-growing U.S. cities in terms of job creation and population growth since 1990.
"While the city remains a big attraction for gambling and nongambling upscale vacationers, it has also earned a name for itself as a top convention town," Fortune said.
Trailing Austin and Las Vegas are Salt Lake City, Phoenix, San Jose, Raleigh, Portland, Atlanta, Denver and Grand Rapids.
