WAC meetings
Friday, May 29, 1998 | 11:03 a.m.
Here's a capsule look at next week's WAC presidents meeting and some of the hot issues that will be discussed:
WHEN: Monday-Wednesday
WHERE: Monterey, Calif.
WHO: The presidents from all 16 WAC institutions plus commissioner Karl Benson.
TOPICS ON TABLE: The move by half the WAC to secede and form its own league; what to do with the remaining eight schools; whether to add a ninth member to their ranks; finding an interim commissioner; choosing a name for the new league; finding a headquarters; getting the NCAA certification paperwork under way; televisiona nd bowl game negotiations.
bf WHAT'S LEFT: Will the WAC try to fill in the gaps by inviting schools from other conferences to join? Will the eight remaining schools remain in the WAC? Would the WAC be able to align with the eight schools that are leaving if the remaining members decide to seek new homes?
WAC '98: The league will remain intact for one more season. Issues regarding scheduling, officiating, bowl affiliations and the conference's championship events in Las Vegas for volleyball, football and men's and women's basketball must be reviewed and clarified.
