Project to spruce up trails

Friday, May 29, 1998 | 10:05 a.m.

The Logandale Trails System soon will be upgraded to include interpretive signs, trail markers and color-coded maps.

The Nevada Trails Coalition is working in partnership with the Nevada United Four-Wheelers Association and the Las Vegas District of Bureau of Land Management to organize and further develop the multi-use recreational area, which includes walking, equestrian, four-wheel and dirt-bike trails.

Groundbreaking for the project's first phase, including a survey and renovation of existing trails, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday. To get there from Las Vegas take Interstate 15 north to the Logandale/Overton exit, then turn right on Liston Road, go to the end of the dirt road, turn right and continue for five miles. There will be balloons along the way to guide visitors.

"The trails are already established. We're just trying to make it so all the trails can be utilized without conflict," Christina Adams, president of Nevada Trails Coalition, said.

Dave Wolf with the BLM said not many people know about the area and that he hopes this will create awareness of what public lands have to offer.

"We want to foster this as an alternative place for people to go," said Wolf, adding that an estimated 200 people a month currently use the trail system.

The first phase also includes construction of restroom and trash facilities and loading and unloading areas for people with disabilities.

Adams said this is one of the first projects in Southern Nevada to receive a grant from Nevada's Recreational Trails Program. The $20,000 grant was matched by trail users, companies, user groups and private donations.

Adams, who said the land is managed by the BLM, said state parks are not involved.
