National Sense of Smell Day at Lied Museum

Friday, May 29, 1998 | 10:32 a.m.

Activities kick off at 10 a.m. and continue through the day. Visitors are challenged to test their smell knowledge by taking part in the "Smelling Bee" and the "Jelly Bean Taste Test." They can find out exactly what makes a scent appealing and make their own signature perfume to enjoy at home in the "What's In an Aroma?" workshop. Specially trained dogs from Metro's K-9 Unit will drop by to demonstrate how their amazing sensory abilities enable them to track and identify scents. In addition, there will be limited giveaways of Smell Day logo pencils and posters.

An in-house essay contest, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Inc., challenges visitors in the elementary, middle and high school grades to respond to an essay question in 50 to 100 words. Local winners in each of the grade levels will receive a $100 savings bond and a chance to compete on the national level, where the prize becomes a $500 savings bond.

National Sense of Smell Day at the museum is co-sponsored by Christian Dior Perfumes Inc. and the Olfactory Research Fund Ltd., who developed the event to increase awareness about the pleasures and importance of our sense of smell.

The museum is at 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Call 382-3445 for information and admission fees.
