Leak forces evacuation of downtown Las Vegas hotel

Friday, May 29, 1998 | 10:23 a.m.

The leak was underneath a driveway at the rear of the Western Hotel-Casino. Air vents to the building were located just above the leak and were allowing the natural gas to enter the building.

The building was evacuated by the Las Vegas Fire Department and power was shut off while Southwest Gas technicians worked to seal off the leak.

Police closed four streets in the immediate area to all traffic.

Occupants were allowed to re-enter the building about 4:30 a.m.

Three people were taken by ambulance to University Medical Center complaining of dizziness and nausea. Their symptoms did not appear to be life-threatening, according to fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski.

The cause of the leak has not been deermined.
