The Jacksonville, Fla.-based FA-18 was flying with at least one other jet and two helicopters 20 miles south of Naval Air Station Fallon when it went down about 9 p.m. Wednesday, air station spokeswoman Anne McMillin said.
The wreckage was found about two hours later in the northern area of the training range.
Authorities did not know the cause of the crash, which occurred about 65 miles southeast of Reno.
The pilot, identified as Lt. Jonathon Bennett Nolan, 28, of Syracuse, N.Y., was in the middle of the training mission over the Bravo 19 range at the time of the crash.
