Task force on ethics to hold hearing tonight

Tuesday, May 26, 1998 | 9:53 a.m.

An ethics task force appointed by Clark County Manager Dale Askew in February plans to unveil and take comment on its proposed recommendations to give public officials more definitive guidelines on state ethics codes.

Among the proposed recommendations are creating an annual ethics workshop for all elected and appointed officials and requesting more funding from the Legislature for the state Ethics Commission to perform its duties.

The task force did not recommend creating a county ethics commission.

The task force is seeking public input on the recommendations, which will be discussed at a public hearing at 7 p.m. tonight in the Pueblo Room of the Clark County Government Center, 500 Grand Central Parkway.

The task force was created to review current standards and codes of ethics to develop guidelines to help public officials determine acceptable and unacceptable practices in the areas of disclosure, abstention and conflicts of interest. The draft document has been posted at more than 80 locations throughout Clark County.

Final recommendations will be presented to the state Ethics Commission for review and to the County Commission for consideration and adoption.

The hearing is not intended for the purpose of discussing specific cases pending before the state Ethics Commission.
