Approval expected for city manager’s contract

A contract with the final candidate for Las Vegas City Manager Virginia Valentine is expected to be approved by the City Council today.
Details of the potential agreement between the city and Valentine will not be made available until after the vote. Officials at City Hall say the agreement is for three years and that she'll start in a couple of weeks.
The soon-to-be-former City Manager Larry Barton was paid $127,000 a year and did not have a contract with the city -- instead he received yearly reviews.
Barton, who has been city manager for almost five years, announced his retirement late last year. Under oath before the Nevada Commission on Ethics, he said that City Councilman Michael McDonald told Barton he should consider retiring before the council voted him out of his position.
Barton originally planned to leave his post in February. However, the council voted to retain him on a monthly basis until his replacement was found.
Barton has said that he'll look for work in the private sector after retiring.
Valentine is currently an engineer with Post, Buckley, Schuh and Jernigan. She was previously the head of the Clark County Flood Control District.
