Editorial: Mount Charleston has second chance
Friday, May 22, 1998 | 10:51 a.m.
Commissioner Lance Malone asked for a new hearing after Mount Charleston residents said the project was approved without adequately studying its impact on water, traffic and the environment. These public safety concerns need to be taken seriously; taken alone they are reason enough to reject the proposal by developer Allen Nel. In addition, the development would add nothing to the area. Mount Charleston is already overdeveloped, and this business venture would only add to intrusions that are helping to destroy this idyllic getaway.
Malone did the right thing in asking for a reconsideration, and the commission should be commended for giving Mount Charleston residents a second chance. Now it's time for the commission to move forward and protect the natural beauty of the alpine treasure that belongs to current and future generation to enjoy. It should reject the development when it comes up for a vote again on July 22.
