Remains found north of Reno; two suspects sought

Wednesday, May 20, 1998 | 2:48 a.m.

In a joint investigation with the Lassen County, Calif., sheriff's office, Washoe County detectives found the remains on Tuesday in the desert about 12 miles east of Doyle, Calif.

Authorities believe they know the victim's identity, but his name was being withheld pending positive identification and notification of relatives.

Murder warrants were issued later in the day for David Scott, 32, and Monti Calvert, 44, Washoe County Sheriff's Sgt. Mark Caldwell said.

Caldwell described the suspects as transients who frequent the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada to prospect along creeks and rivers.

The men also are known to frequent the Susanville, Calif., area, he said.

Investigators believe Scott and Calvert may be traveling in a tan, full-sized, 1979 Chevrolet pickup truck with a camper shell and bearing a Wisconsin license plate, BJ46099.

Anyone with information on the suspects' whereabouts was asked to call the Washoe County sheriff's office at 328-3320; or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
