Letter: Last chance to win the ‘notch’ battle
Wednesday, May 20, 1998 | 10:54 a.m.
Our worst nightmare is the AARP. They spent millions to defeat the notch babies, used our money against us and won by two votes, 49-47. This time, we will win, correct the terrible injustice done to the original notch babies born from 1917-1921. Those born in years 1922 through 1926 years were added later.
I am a 78-year-old World War II vet with medals I'd gladly give back to our government for a notch win!
We must get that 1941 spirit once again, stand tall as men and women notchers and shout, "Show us the money!" Do it today. Call, write or fax your congressmen, call the White House. This is an election year, gray power can win one for the Gipper. Power to us!
The fairness act, HR3008, sponsored by Rep. Mark Neumann, R-Wis., is our final chance. We can bend a little, the $5,000 for the 1917-1921 original notchers and $2,500 to the 1922-1926 babies. This will be a lump sum, no piecemeal. June Farr hit it on the head: Show us the full amount now!
Our thanks as notch babies to James Roosevelt, who started the ball rolling. He died before completing the notch victory.
