Las Vegas Stars scorecard — May 20, 1998

Good news on the injury front. The MRIs for outfielder Charles Poe and first baseman Jason Thompson both came back negative and both could be back in the lineup by the end of the week. Poe suffered what was called a sprained knee sliding into home plate on Sunday while Thompson jammed his shoulder diving for a ball on Friday night. He was placed on the 7-day disabled list retroactive to that game. "It was nerve-wracking," Poe said of waiting for his MRI results, which he got when he arrived at Cashman Field at 3:30. So how did Poe pass the time? He had root canal work done on Tuesday morning. "That was the scariest part of my day," Poe said. ... Thompson said swelling in his shoulder has gone down. "It feels much better today," he said. "I couldn't even move it for a couple of days. I thought I had some real problems there for a while." ... Monday was a big night for Stars' first base coach Craig Colbert. Not only did the 33-year-old Colbert, who was activated as an emergency roster fill-in on Monday, drive in the only Las Vegas run with a second inning single, he also won a video poker jackpot a few hours later at the Tap House. ... Colbert hung a Las Vegas Sun photo of his big hit over his locker Tuesday, something that drew more than a few snide comments from his coaching colleagues. He then went out and lined a double off the right field fence to drive in the Stars' final run in the 9-4 loss to Vancouver. ... When Fausto Cruz doubled in Gary Thurman with two outs in the top of the eighth, it snapped a 18 1/3 inning scoreless inning string by Stars' relievers. ... Stars starter Matt Clement hit two more batters Tuesday night, upping his season total to 12. He has hit at least one batter in each of eight starts.
Upcoming games
The Stars conclude their home stand with Vancouver with a 7 p.m. game tonight at Cashman Field. Right-hander Brad Kaufman (1-2, 3.48) starts for the Stars against Vancouver left-hander Trevor Wilson (0-5, 5.80). Las Vegas opens a four-game series with the Omaha Royals on Thursday night at Rosenblatt Stadium, which will host the College World Series next week.
Attendance
Tuesday's crowd: 3,330.
Season total: 90,462 (22 dates).
Average per date: 4,112.
