Women inmates graduate from Displaced Homemaker Program

Thursday, May 14, 1998 | 10:46 a.m.

The Displaced Homemaker Program offered at the Southern Nevada Women's Correctional Facility has become so popular, there's now a waiting list to get into the class, said Desiree Dones, program manager for HELP of Southern Nevada, a non-profit group that sponsors the class.

On Thursday, 22 members of the program's first graduating class participated in a graduation ceremony at the prison.

"Our mission is to help people become self-sufficient," Ms. Dones said.

Some of the women will be paroled within the year while others don't even have a parole date set, she said. The inmates are in jail for various crimes including check fraud, drug convictions and murder, Ms. Dones said.

The program teaches the women the skills to find a job and become self-sufficient after their release.

"If they have an opportunity to work on these now, it'll be a little easier when they get out," Ms. Dones said.
