Letter: Affirmative action fosters racial anger
Thursday, May 14, 1998 | 11 a.m.
I am talking about affirmative action, which uses racial preferences in admissions, hiring and promotions. Not only are racial preferences approved by the administration, but they are only used in selected areas, to benefit certain racial minorities and not others.
For example, UNLV's basketball and football teams are obviously underrepresented by whites and Asians. Why aren't racial preferences used to correct this situation?
If administrators say that affirmative action is needed to overcome an atmosphere of racial anger, do they ever stop to consider that the anger understandably results from affirmative-action policies like these?
I also suggest the following, to distribute the benefits of affirmative action to all levels of society: Would the white and Asian UNLV administrators who support affirmative action please resign your position so that a less-qualified African-American or Hispanic individual could take your place?
